Nicolas Girard, RPF, PhD Student
Originally from the Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Nicolas obtained his BSc. in Forest Management and MSc. in Forest Sciences from the Université de Moncton. His research focuses on ecological forestry under climate change, with a particular interest in using forest modelling and decision-support systems to translate natural disturbance regimes into practical management strategies at the landscape level. Before beginning his PhD. at UNB, he worked as a professional forester managing the Université de Moncton’s Experimental Forest and teaching forestry field courses. In his spare time, Nicolas enjoys fishing, gaming, and listening to 80s rock music.

Megan de Graaf (she/her/elle), PhD. Candidate
Megan is originally from the Sussex, NB, area and now lives on her farm and forest closer to Petitcodiac. She completed a BSc in Biology at Dalhousie University, and a MScF in Forest Ecology at UNB, and now is completing her PhD part-time while continuing to work as the Forest Program Director for Community Forests International. Her doctoral research seeks to better understand how forest management can be used to optimize climate change resilience and carbon storage capacity in the small-private forest landbase of the Wabanaki (Acadian) forest region. When not working, writing, or farming, Megan enjoys reading, and knitting and spinning fibre from her cashmere goats.

Jacob Ravn, PhD. Candidate
Co-supervised with Dr. Loïc D’Orangeville
Jacob hails from Sussex Corner, New Brunswick and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Forestry degrees from UNB. His current research focuses on studying the physiological responses of tree and forest ecosystems to climate change.

Ben Vandewater, MScF. Student
Ben completed his BSc. in Forestry at UNB in 2024 and works for the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. For his MScF. he will be calibrating a new forest stand simulation model and using this model to develop climate-informed stand yield tables and succession rules to support forest management in New Brunswick.

Adyen MacFarlane, MScF. Student
Ayden grew up in southern Ontario and recently completed their BSc. in Forestry at UNB in 2026. Their MScF. research will focus on studying the effects of climate change on white spruce plantation productivity. In their spare time they enjoy doing pottery, hiking, and spending time with their cat Pebbles.

Richard Aspinall, MScF. Student
Richard is from Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S. He finished his bachelor’s degree in Forestry at Michigan State University in 2025. His MScF. research will use forest modeling software to predict carbon stocks and fluxes in New Brunswick’s forests, with support from the  Ecological Forestry Research Initiative (EFRI) and Community Forest International. He has particular interest in the fields of forest carbon, native range shifts, and dendrochronology. When out of work, Richard enjoys spending his time with friends, hiking, painting, or playing video games.

Riley Ward-Stickler, MScF. Student
Riley grew up in southern Ontario and obtained his BSc.in  Forestry from UNB in 2025. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms and pathways of forest succession in the Acadian forest region. In his spare time he enjoys travelling, history, listening to music, and practicing guitar.

Miruna Dragomir, MScEM. Student
Miruna, also known as Mira, is from Piatra Neamț, Romania. She did most of her education in Hamilton, Ontario, where she received a Bachelor of Arts & Science from McMaster University. Mira’s passion for forests, ecology, and conservation brought her to study environmental management at UNB. Her research involves modeling the effects of climate change on various forest ecosystems within Nova Scotia. In her spare time, Mira enjoys birdwatching, hiking, video games, and watching anime shows. 

Tiago Geldart, MScF. Student
Tiago was born in Switzerland and spent his early childhood in Europe before moving to Fredericton in 2012. He graduated with a BScF. From UNB in 2023. His master’s research focuses on the effects of silviculture practices on forest carbon stocks with an interest in ecological forestry. Tiago has worked as an arborist during his undergraduate degree and is now a co-owner of a local tree company called AFM Pro Forestry. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, paddle boarding, surfing, skiing and snowboarding.

Kyle McCarthy, MScF. Student
Kyle grew up in Ajax, Ontario. Following his technical diploma in Environmental Technology and Forestry from Fleming College, he enrolled at UNB and graduated with a BScF. in 2022. He’s now a MScF. student at UNB focusing on the use of tree marking in Nova Scotia to aid in operator productivity, improve stocking quality, and promote biodiversity. In his spare time he works as a contract climbing arborist and partakes in logger sports shows throughout North America.

Sean O’Connor, MScF. Student
Sean grew up in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, and received his Forest Technician’s diploma from the Maritime College of Forest Technology in 2022. He went on to complete his BSc in Forestry at UNB in 2024 and developed an interest in natural disturbances. Sean’s research focuses on the effects of different silviculture systems on windthrow vulnerability, in partnership with the Ecological Forestry Research Initiative in Nova Scotia. He is rarely seen without coffee, and spends his free time listening to and playing music.

Jordan Green, MScF. Student
Co-supervised with Dr. Chris Edge
Jordan was born and raised in Woodstock, New Brunswick and has recently completed his BSc.ENR with a major in Environmental Management. Jordan’s research interests are focused on quantifying the relationship between forest structure and the habitat associations of avian species at risk. In his spare time, Jordan enjoys cooking, camping, and hiking with his dog, Willow. 

Liam Dalton, MScEM. Student
Liam is from Hampton, New Brunswick. He completed a BSc. Biology at UNB, with a special interest in ecology. His research is focused on forest landscape modeling and implementation of natural disturbance-based forest management in Nova Scotia. Outside of school, he likes climbing, cycling, and camping.
