Cédric Albert, PhD Candidate
Co-supervised with Dr. Loïc D’Orangeville
Cédric Albert completed a Bachelor degree in forest management at the University of Moncton. He also received the Canadian Institute of Forestry gold medal for his hard work. His thesis focuses on the impact of implementing different adaptive forest management strategies for future forest function and resilience to future global change scenarios. When not working, Cédric manages is own forest land, rides with friends and plays video games.
Brighten Ching, PhD. Student
Co-supervised with Dr. Chris Edge
Brighten’s interest in ecology and conservation first began during her childhood while growing up in southern Ontario. This interest compelled her to complete an Honours BSc in Biology at Wilfrid Laurier University, followed by an MSc in Ecological Management and Conservation Biology in 2023 at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland. Today, she is thrilled to be at UNB where she will be researching multi-objective forest planning and the applications of forest projection models to predict future forest condition. When she isn’t working, Brighten enjoys reading, baking, and spending time at her family’s cabin near Lake Huron.
Megan de Graaf (she/her/elle), PhD. Student
Megan is originally from the Sussex, NB, area and now lives on her farm and forest closer to Petitcodiac. She completed a BSc in Biology at Dalhousie University, and a MScF in Forest Ecology at UNB, and now is completing her PhD part-time while continuing to work as the Forest Program Director for Community Forests International. Her doctoral research seeks to better understand how forest management can be used to optimize climate change resilience and carbon storage capacity in the small-private forest landbase of the Wabanaki (Acadian) forest region. When not working, writing, or farming, Megan enjoys reading, and knitting and spinning fibre from her cashmere goats.
Rob Vaughn, PhD. Candidate
Originally from Southern Ontario, Rob received a B.Sc. from the University of Guelph and an M.Sc. in Forestry from the UNB. His Ph.D. research focuses on climate warming effects on growth and survival of tree species native to the Acadian Forest Region. He lives with his family in Fredericton, NB and enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, and designing empirical climate change experiments!
Direct Supervision – Masters Students (n=11):
Tiago Geldart, MScF. Student
Tiago was born in Switzerland and spent his early childhood in Europe before moving to Fredericton in 2012. He graduated with a BScF. From UNB in 2023. His master’s research focuses on the effects of silviculture practices on forest carbon stocks with an interest in ecological forestry. Tiago has worked as an arborist during his undergraduate degree and is now a co-owner of a local tree company called AFM Pro Forestry. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, paddle boarding, surfing, skiing and snowboarding.
Kyle McCarthy, MScF. Student
Kyle grew up in Ajax, Ontario. Following his technical diploma in Environmental Technology and Forestry from Fleming College, he enrolled at UNB and graduated with a BScF. in 2022. He’s now a MScF. student at UNB focusing on the use of tree marking in Nova Scotia to aid in operator productivity, improve stocking quality, and promote biodiversity. In his spare time he works as a contract climbing arborist and partakes in logger sports shows throughout North America.
Sean O’Connor, MScF. Student
Sean grew up in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, and received his Forest Technician’s diploma from the Maritime College of Forest Technology in 2022. He went on to complete his BSc in Forestry at UNB in 2024 and developed an interest in natural disturbances. Sean’s research focuses on the effects of different silviculture systems on windthrow vulnerability, in partnership with the Ecological Forestry Research Initiative in Nova Scotia. He is rarely seen without coffee, and spends his free time listening to and playing music.
James Stephens, MScF. Student
James is a professional appraiser and agrologist investigating how carbon sequestration models may benefit the appraisal profession and landowners. He has a BSc.(ENV) in Natural Resource Management from the University of Guelph, an Advanced Diploma in GIS from the NSCC Centre for Geographic Sciences, and a Diploma in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia. He is the owner of Hillside Consulting Ltd. and lives with his partner and dogs on a humble woodland homestead in beautiful Unama’ki (Cape Breton), Nova Scotia.
Jordan Green, MScF. Student
Co-supervised with Dr. Chris Edge
Jordan was born and raised in Woodstock, New Brunswick and has recently completed his BSc.ENR with a major in Environmental Management. Jordan’s research interests are focused on quantifying the relationship between forest structure and the habitat associations of avian species at risk. In his spare time, Jordan enjoys cooking, camping, and hiking with his dog, Willow.
Patrick Maclennan, MF. Student
Patrick is from Dartmouth, NS. He completed his undergraduate degree from St. Francis Xavier University in 2015 and received a Forest Technology diploma from the Maritime College of Forest Technology in 2023. Patrick most recently worked with the IRM team of the Department of Natural Resources & Renewables in western Nova Scotia. He enjoys travelling, alpine skiing, backcountry camping and spending time at his family cabin near Kejimkujik National Park. Patrick is looking forward to furthering his studies at UNB.
Nick Thompson, MF. Student
Nick grew up in Ontario and has been living in the Maritimes since 2006. Before graduating with a BSc in Biology from Dalhousie, Nick studied at the University of King’s college and became interested in ecological forestry during an internship at Whaelghinbran farm. For the past 8 years Nick has been working in and around the woods, focusing on climate change adaptation and forest restoration. His MF project will focus on soil carbon, and is in partnership with Community Forests International. Nick loves learning, building, fixing things, and playing with cats.
Maddie Sheppard, MScF. Student
Co-supervised with Dr. Deepa Pureswaran
Maddie is a proud Charlotte County, New Brunswicker who recently completed her B.ScENR (with honors) in Water Resource Management at UNB. Her primary research interest (and first love) is forest entomology, but also enjoys other aspects of forest ecology. Her research focuses on how elevated temperatures and spruce budworm presence impact chemical defence compounds in white spruce and balsam fir. Outside of work, she enjoys cycling, fishing, playing her switch, and paddling.
Carley Archibald, MF. Student
Carley grew up in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, where she still spends most of her free time hiking, biking, and getting lost in the coastal Acadian forest. Her background includes a B.Sc. in Environmental Science and Certificate in GIS from Dalhousie University. She’s excited to be at UNB to focus her studies on forestry, and use Remsoft Woodstock to develop a management plan for one of the university woodlots.
Nathan Tremblett, MScF. Student
Nathan was born and raised in Conception Bay South, Nfld. He received Forest Resources and Fish and Wildlife Technician diplomas from the College of the North Atlantic, then transferred to UNB to complete a BScF. His research is on the effects of Climate Change on white spruce plantation productivity. In his spare time he enjoys playing sports and the woods ( hiking, biking, and photography). Fun fact: while camping in Wood Buffalo national park last summer he was awoken at 3 am to a Bison having a taste of his tent.
Liam Dalton, MScEM. Student
Liam is from Hampton, New Brunswick. He completed a BSc. Biology at UNB, with a special interest in ecology. His research is focused on forest landscape modeling and implementation of natural disturbance-based forest management in Nova Scotia. Outside of school, he likes climbing, cycling, and camping.
